“Design a house as a world.” - Alex McDowell (he said this when explaining his thoughts about the house design for ‘Fight Club’.)
I took inspiration from Alex McDowell’s workshop in the Ormeau Baths. He has worked on creating world concepts for movies like ‘Fight Club’, ‘Superman’ and ‘Minority Report’. It was invaluable to learn from an industry professional who specialised in developing futuristic technologies and environments for film. He highlighted how storytelling is a powerful skill that can help create a believable world with which the characters can connect. His work on the film Minority Report was one of the first times people were introduced to gesture recognition, projected screens and wearable technologies.
This helped me get into the correct mindset when coming up with the home of the future, and create one that reflects on those who live in it, as it is their world.
“AI has two main aims. One is technological: using computers to get useful things done (sometimes by employing methods very unlike those used by minds). The other is scientific: using AI concepts and models to help answer questions about human beings and other living things.” (Boden, 2016).
