I took inspiration from Week 3’s class on speculative design. My idea lies between the Probable and Plausible outcomes, based on the fact that the world is heading towards a climate disaster unless steps are taken to stop it. Overconsumption of resources, pollution and deforestation are causing us to head towards disaster. This could lead to loss of habitats, species extinction, resource depletion, rising sea levels, acid rain and other extreme weather conditions (Rudlin & Falk, 2016). ‘The build up of CO2 in the atmosphere would run out of control… making the planet uninhabitable… if not in our lifetime, then that of our children or grandchildren. There is no greater danger facing humankind…’ (Rudlin & Falk, 2016).

Unfortunately, at the current carbon emission rate, the world will exceed the 1.5°C tipping point by 2030 if this trend continues (Fletcher, 2024). This means that the climate crisis will be beyond the point of reversal, and life will become much more difficult.

‘Sustainable development means living on the earth’s income rather than eroding its capital. It means keeping the consumption of renewable natural resources within the limits of replenishment.” - UK Government (Rudlin & Falk, 2016)

The recent growth in the environmental movement has significantly influenced government policies and public attitudes (Rudlin & Falk, 2016). In 2019, the UK parliament declared a climate and ecological emergency (www.london.gov.uk, n.d.). This has created a sense of urgency with big businesses, but for some reason, it has not been implemented heavily in households.
